Barnes Myofascial Release

The John F. Barnes Myofascial Release (MFR) is a whole-person health-care approach that supports healing and well-being. The fascia (connective tissue) is a continuous web from head to toe; treatment in one area produces positive tissue responses and invaluable information about other areas of the body. Trauma to the fascial system may occur as macro trauma caused by an accident or surgery and scarring.

MFR is a highly effective technique which includes slow continuous pressure and gentle stretching. I wait where resistance is first detected, allowing time for the fascia to soften and release, then sink to the next point of resistance and wait again. Micro traumas also accumulate over time. Examples include repetitive motions, poor posture, or working daily with a computer mouse. This repetitive use tightens and hardens fascia, eventually intensifying and compromising movement.

MFR reduces inflammation and pain, increases range of motion, eases breathing, releases tension, lowers stress levels, aids digestion, promotes breast health, and enhances restful sleep. I strongly advocate self-treatment at work and at home and teach patients techniques to continue the healing process between sessions.
